Artwork requirements for one off DTG prints.
Getting your artwork right makes a real difference to the finished result. Here's what you need:
- File format: PNG with transparent background
- Resolution: 300dpi at the intended print size
- Maximum print area: 40 × 45cm
- Colour mode: RGB
- White backgrounds: Only acceptable if you're printing onto a white garment. For anything else, your background must be transparent.
If your artwork is at screen resolution (72dpi), the print quality will be poor and the tool will warn you but it won't stop you checking out. If you're unsure about your file, get in touch before ordering and we'll take a look.

Printing on light and dark garments.
DTG works on both. For designs going onto dark or coloured garments, we apply a white underbase first which makes the colours pop on navy, black or bottle green. The same design on a white garment will have a slightly softer, more muted finish because no underbase is needed (which also gives an even softer hand feel).
If you're matching specific brand colours or Pantone references we'd recommend ordering a sample to check the result before committing to a larger order. For critical colour accuracy it's worth factoring in that screen printing with water-based inks gives more consistent spot colour matching though that option requires a minimum of 20 units.
Using one off prints for pre-production sampling.
This is one of the smartest things you can do before a bulk print run and we'd always recommend it. For the cost of a single garment you can hold the actual product, check placement, assess colour reproduction on the specific fabric and colourway you're planning to use, and confirm sizing before placing a larger order.
It's particularly valuable if you're:
- Launching branded merchandise for the first time
- Testing a new design on a different garment style or colour
- Producing samples for photography or e-commerce listings
- Checking how a multicolour or photographic design reproduces on a specific fabric
If you then go on to place a screen printing order of 50+ units or a larger DTG run, the sample cost is money well spent rather than a risk on a full production run.

Yes — DTG is ideal for photographs and full colour artwork. There are no colour restrictions, no separations and no extra charges for complex images. Upload a high-resolution PNG and the design tool handles the rest.
Yes. We print onto both light and dark garments. Dark garments require a white underbase to be applied first, which gives the colours their vibrancy. The same design on a white and a dark garment may look slightly different — if colour accuracy matters, we recommend ordering a sample first.
